Petalwise is heavily involved in community, when women need support, we're there! We can't possibly document it all, but this time we were lucky to have a camera nearby. Sherley Accime, Licensed massage therapist/activist invited us to lend our support at Third Root Community Health Center in Brooklyn, NY to their first annual Nanny Spa Day Health Forum on April 6th, 2014. We were delighted to participate.
Mostly Caribbean immigrants, often overlooked, these are the women selflessly caring for the children of others. They're responsible for raising the next generation of trendsetters, artists, musicians, teachers and architects of Brooklyn. Most have never seen the inside of a spa or ever been exposed to alternative medicine treatments for their ailments. We were warmly greeted by their caring spirits. Sore feet and aching backs were eager to sit on our zero gravity chairs. We treated them to a variety of therapeutic services including acupuncture, massage, and even a workshop on self care acupressure. I led a meditation that emphasized the deep gratitude the world feels for the work they do as Sherley smudged each woman with smoky ceremonial sage.
We left the space in good spirits, tense looks of cautious skepticism turned to smiles and relaxed shoulders. New bonds of sisterhood had been formed as women agreed to stay in touch with one another and most promised they'd return to the center in the near future. My heart was filled with joy, we had done good. I walked to my car with a smile as I passed a budding Dogwood, a symbol of sacrifice and regeneration.
